We are keen to teach about the art created in the studio and share our knowledge and passion. We run workshops showcasing the history of the recording industry. These involve a hands-on demonstrative learning experience, starting with vintage tape machines and moving along to the modern-day processes.

These workshops operate as one-on-one or as groups. We often have schools and colleges visit us for this experience. We also offer masterclasses with industry professionals throughout the year with world-class producers and engineers. Our staff are DBS checked and have previous teaching experience.

Courses

The art of studio recording is a 12-week programme that has been designed for beginners or intermediate learners to develop abilities as a competent and successful audio engineer. As a student, you will learn the fundamental principles of audio engineering and the practical application of EQs, dynamics, signal routing, microphones, and much more.

FAQS

What happens if I am unable to attend a certain date?
Depending on notice given we will always try to accommodate the learners needs, and arrange a catch up session for any classes missed.

What qualification will I gain?
Our course is independent and not affiliated with any education body. However we do issue a certificate of completion.

What are the progression routes after the course?
Every learner on the course will have a different objective / reason for attending. Many people choose to go into another education establishment, others choose to pursue further through real world learning in a recording environment.

What are the entry requirements?
There are no formal entry requirements for our course. We just look for people who are committed to learning the craft of recording.

Can I visit the studio first?
Yes, we definitely like to meet with learners and talk through the course and options that are right for them.

Do you offer work experience through schools/colleges?
We do offer work experience; however, it is hard to know the studios schedule so far in advance so please bear with us whilst we work out our availability. With tape being used less than in previous decades, many people are looking to have their work digitised. Using our various size tape machines and baking oven we have successfully transferred tapes dating back to the 1960’s.

Whether it be a ¼ inch or 24 track 2-inch tape, we can transfer it to a digital format using hi-end audio converters at a great price. This service is becoming increasingly popular and we are proudly able to offer it. We have a 24 track 2 inch Otari MTR90 MK3, 4 track 1 inch Studer J37, 2 track half inch Otari MTR 12 and a 2 track quarter inch AMPEX AG-440 to accommodate your needs and digitise your tapes.

We also have the ability to prepare old tapes to be safely used with our machines using our baking process. Old tapes, particularly those manufactured by Ampex and Scotch from the 1970s onwards, may suffer from ‘Sticky Shed Syndrome’.  This is where the binder ‘glue’ which adheres the magnetic particles to the plastic tape stock can become ‘gooey’ as it absorbs moisture from the air over time. These tapes need to be carefully ‘baked’ – that is, dehydrated – in order to make them playable again.

Our engineer oversees the whole process so you can trust us with your valuable recordings.

Pricing

£25 to bake. Our oven holds 2 tapes, and this process takes 10hours and the tape needs to be turned every 2 hours.
£60p/h to transfer

FAQs

Do my tapes need to be baked?
The older the tape, the higher the chance it will need baking. We recommend all tapes are baked before being placed on our machines to minimise any trauma to the tape transfer.

Can I attend the transfer session?
Yes, you are welcome to attend the session at an additional cost

Do you digitalise other formats?
Yes, we don’t just digitalise tapes, we can digitalise cassettes and vinyls for you so you can keep cherished demos or memories.
